IT CAN SAVE LIVES!
Self-Breast Checks
I found my own lump. Below is a short video on how I regularly checked my breast for any abnormalities. This is what saved my life. Most women only see their Gynecologist once maybe twice a year. So they aren’t being checked regularly. Get familiar with your breast tissue & make it a habit to check daily. No one knows your body like you do and you must be an advocate for yourself because no one else will. Your life depends on it.
Annual Mammograms
Don’t miss your annual screenings. It’s vital to your health. (SBC) at times won’t always catch a tumor if one is there because some women won’t show any symptoms. Typically, women younger than 35 aren’t screened for breast cancer using mammograms and in my case I was never given a mammogram because I was “too young” even though the doctors knew my family history. My mother was diagnosed twice and I have two deceased aunts who passed from cancer. So I urge you, if you have a family history with cancer or if something just doesn’t feel right. Ask your doctor to get a mammogram, get a second opinion and/or request an ultrasound and biopsy so you’ll know for sure.
Genetic Testing
After I was diagnosed my Oncologist also requested I receive a genetic test for the BRCA gene. I’d never heard of this before until my mother was tested after her 2nd fight with breast cancer. She tested positive for carrying the gene for breast cancer. If you carry the gene ask your doctor about what preventative measures you can take to lower your risks of possibly getting the disease. As a preventative measure it was recommended for me to have a total hysterectomy. Ovarian Cancer is also a potential risk for women who carry the gene.
